State-run Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 47.5 million tonnes of coal in August 2026, falling 5.75% from 50.4 million tonnes a year ago, according to a company statement.

The output volume fell by two consecutive months, 5.75% lower than the month-ago 50.4 million tonnes, CIL data showed.

CIL's coal sales came in at 60.6 million tonnes in August, a 5.57% rise year on year yet declining 4.87% month on month, marking the third consecutive month of decline, data showed.

The company produced 267.5 million tonnes of coal during the first five months of FY26-27 (April-August 2026), down 4.5% from 280.2 million tonnes in the same period last year. April-August sales gained 6.7% year on year to 322.9 million tonnes, data showed.

Among CIL's subsidiaries, Eastern Coalfields Ltd recorded the sharpest year-on-year growth in August output at 39.5%, producing 3.7 million tonnes against 2.7 million tonnes in August 2025.

Northern Coalfields Ltd and Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd, the company's two largest producers, saw coal output fall by 24.8% and 10%, respectively, in August, hitting 8.5 million tonnes and 14.2 million tonnes.

As of coal offtakes, Western Coalfields Ltd led the growth chart with a year-on-year increase of 47.3%, data showed.

In addition, CIL's supplies to the non-power sector gained 9.6% from a year ago to 12.12 million tonnes last month.

The higher supplies enabled the company to clear about 55 million tonnes of mine-mouth coal inventories during the first five months of the current fiscal year, it stated.

At present, the miner has about 76 million tonnes of coal stockpiled at its pitheads, ready to meet power generation demand in the months ahead.

CIL noted that its is gearing up to raise both production and deliveries as the monsoon tapers off and drier weather sets in.
