Aug 31, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a regular press conference that China never deliberately pursues a trade surplus and opposes all forms of unilateral tariff measures, responding to U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent's remarks that the world cannot allow China to run a $1.2 trillion trade surplus and that the G20 should revisit trade terms with China. Guo said China adheres to high-level opening-up and offers new opportunities to all parties, including the United States, through its large market. "China and the United States should jointly implement the important consensus of the two heads of state, resolve relevant issues through consultation on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit, and safeguard the hard-won positive momentum in the current economic and trade field," Guo said.
