Thailand's thermal coal (incl. bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) imports stood at 1.20 million tonnes in July 2026, retreating 21.16% from a month ago, according to the latest customs data.

The volume was also 50.67% lower than the year-ago 1.53 million tonnes, data showed.

Bituminous coal imports amounted to 445,477 tonnes in July, rising 3.23% compared to the level in July 2025 yet sliding 63.67% from the preceding month. Most of the imports were from Indonesia at 325,545 tonnes, growing 11.30% from a year ago. The U.S. shipped 119,391 tonnes of Bituminous coal to Thailand last month, far higher than 19 tonnes a year earlier.

Sub-bituminous coal imports totaled 759,078 tonnes during the same month, diving 30.76% year on year and 37.55% month on month. Indonesia remained the largest supplier, shipping 576,504 tonnes to Thailand, down 44.18% from a year earlier. Imports from the Philippines stood at 111,221 tonnes, compared to zero seen in July 2025.

Additionally, anthracite imports were 5,545 tonnes, compared to 618 tonnes in the same period last year and 44,113 tonnes in June. In July, the country did not import coking coal.

In the first seven months this year, Thailand imported 11.76 million tonnes of thermal coal, up 8.90% on the year. Of this, bituminous coal imports totaled 3.98 million tonnes, gaining 5.02% year on year, while sub-bituminous coal imports reached 7.78 million tonnes, climbing 11.00% compared to last year.

In January-June, Thailand consumed 11.30 million tonnes of coal (incl. lignite), down 25.7% year on year. Of this, power plant consumed 5.71 million tonnes, retreating 40.3% on the year and accounting for 50.5% of the country's total, according to data from the Energy Policy and Planning Office.
