Canada's coal exports rose for a second consecutive month in June 2026, up 17.84% from May, though they remained 13.30% below the same period last year, with the decline narrowing by 13.93 percentage points from the previous month.

June exports totaled 2.93 million tonnes, with export value reaching $637 million, up 7.0% month on month but down 0.53% year on year.

China's mainland was the top destination in June, receiving 768,900 tonnes, down 39.0% year on year but up 13.78% from May. Japan followed at 765,400 tonnes, up 44.80% on the year and 13.25% month on month. South Korea took 628,800 tonnes, down 25.97% from a year ago but up 22.54% from the previous month. Exports to the Netherlands totaled 185,100 tonnes, up 52.94% year on year, after zero shipments in May.

In the first half of 2026, Canada's coal exports totaled 16.02 million tonnes, down 15.41% year on year, with export value at $3.62 billion, down 5.31%. Shipments to China's mainland reached 4.19 million tonnes in January-June, down 28.55% from the year prior.
