S Korea's KOWEPO seeks up to 2 Mt of high-CV thermal coal in 5-yr tender

South Korea's Korea Western Power Co., Ltd. (KOWEPO) issued a tender on August 21 to secure long-term high-CV thermal coal supply totaling up to 2.02 million tonnes for its Taean power plant, covering a five-year contract period.

Under the tender (No. KOWEPO-COAL-2026-LT-09), bidders need to commit an initial cargo of 155,000 tonnes (±10%) for the first contract year, loading from Indonesian, Australian or Canadian ports between the second half of October and December 2026, or from South African ports between November and December 2026.

Cargoes loaded at Newcastle port will instead be sized at 130,000 tonnes (±10%). Coal loaded at Russian, Chinese or Colombian ports is not accepted.

This is followed by annual deliveries of 465,000 tonnes (±10%) for the second to fifth contract years, running from November 1, 2026 through October 31, 2030, applicable where the first cargo loads in October 2026 and subject to adjustment according to the actual shipment month.

Coal under the tender must carry a guaranteed calorific value of 5,200-6,000 Kcal/kg NAR, with total sulfur capped at 0.6% and ash at 17%.

Each shipment must be supplied entirely from a single coal mine. First-year price will be quoted as a single fixed price on an FOB basis, with payment by T/T or L/C.

The tender closes at 10:00 Korea Standard Time on August 27, 2026.
