Russia's 27 coal mining enterprises with a total output of 40 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) are in a pre-bankruptcy state, while other 62 enterprises with an overall production of 126 Mtpa have a loss above the industry average, Vedomosti reported, citing materials as part of a coal industry anti-crisis plan from the country's energy ministry.
The industry is expected to lose up to 40 Mtpa in output due to corporate bankruptcies, and exports may drop by 15%. Russia's coal production amounted to 438.6 million tonnes in 2024, decreasing 0.2% on the year, according to the Energy Ministry. In other words, enterprises providing about 9% of output are on the verge of bankruptcy, while another 29% are at risk.
The share of unprofitable coal companies was 50% at the end of 2024, and the industry's revenue was 1.8 trillion rubles, falling 19% compared to 2023. Meanwhile, the pre-tax loss reached 129 billion rubles in 2024, but the industry was in positive balance with a profit of 357 billion rubles a year earlier.
The most difficult situation has developed in Kuzbass and Khakassia, and the share of unprofitable coal companies has reached 57.3% and 50% respectively.
The revenue of coal companies in Kuzbass has decreased 300% to 84.9 billion rubles, while it has plummeted 1200% in Khakassia to only 1.4 billion rubles. Nine enterprises in Kuzbass and two in Khakassia have stopped work.
