India's Aug renewable power output up nearly 40% YoY

India's renewable electricity generation, excluding large hydropower, reached 38.79 TWh in August 2026, up 39.24% year on year, as solar and wind continued to dominate the clean energy mix, according to Central Electricity Authority data.

Solar and wind together contributed nearly 94% of total renewable generation. Solar produced 18.63 TWh, accounting for about 48% of the total, supported by additions in utility-scale projects, rooftop installations and open-access procurement by commercial and industrial consumers.

Wind generation crossed 17.82 TWh, contributing roughly 46%, with continued capacity additions in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Karnataka.

Installed solar capacity reached 168.04 GW by end-August, while wind capacity stood at 58.52 GW. The expansion has been supported by improving project economics, financing availability, declining module prices and government policies promoting clean energy deployment.

The rapid growth is creating greater demand for transmission infrastructure and grid management. Higher renewable penetration will require additional transmission capacity, improved flexibility and wider deployment of battery storage to manage variations in solar and wind output. Domestic manufacturing of modules, cells and other equipment will also remain important as India seeks to strengthen supply chains and reduce import dependence.

India has set a target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The August data indicates continued momentum in renewable deployment and highlights the growing role of solar and wind in meeting future electricity demand.
