The Wari Railway, a heavy-haul corridor for coal transport from Shanxi, has completed its autumn maintenance, reinforcing the line ahead of winter power coal supply.
The maintenance on the Wari Railway ran from September 4 to September 23, with three hours of daily work over 20 days to upgrade and overhaul equipment along the entire line, according to China News Service.
A total of 26.31 km of track was cleaned by large machinery, 255.51 km of track was tamped, 120 turnouts were tamped and 323.35 km of track was ground, giving facilities a thorough inspection and extensive upgrade.
The Wari Railway runs from Watang town in Xingxian county, Luliang city, Shanxi province, in the west to Rizhao port in Shandong province in the east, crossing Shanxi, Henan and Shandong. It is a key route for transporting western coal eastward and China's first heavy-haul railway built at one time to a 30-tonne axle load.
In recent years, the railway's transport capacity has continued to expand. After annual freight volume topped 100 million tonnes in 2022 and 2023, it reached 100.07 million tonnes in 2025, the third time annual volume exceeded 100 million tonnes.
To strengthen coal gathering on the Wari Railway, the Xingbao Railway double-track project completed equipment adjustments and interlocking tests before opening and began operations on March 27.
The Xingbao Railway is a dedicated coal line linking Fengjiachuan station, the largest loading base on the Wari Railway, with Watang station. With the double-track line in operation, overall transport capacity has risen to 130 million tonnes, and Fengjiachuan station's long-term loading capacity has reached 91 million tonnes, making it one of China's largest inland coal loading stations.
The double-track operation has strengthened the Wari Railway's coal gathering capacity through a "large-in, large-out, fast-loading, fast-transport" model, adding momentum to stable energy supply.
Data showed the Wari Railway moved 75.33 million tonnes of freight in the first eight months of this year, playing an active role in safeguarding energy security.
