Russian steel body warns benzene export bans risk coking plant disruptions

Representatives of the Russian Steel Association warned that the introduction of restrictions on benzene exports could cause serious technological disruptions at coking plants, Vedomosti reported. This chemical feedstock is continuously emitted as a byproduct during coke production. Its long-term storage at industrial sites is strictly limited to seven days because of its high toxicity and detonation risks. Currently, about 80% of the produced material is supplied to domestic processors, while the remaining 20% is shipped to foreign buyers. Russian plants often cannot ensure uniform receipt of the entire production volume, and if storage tanks overflow, this could completely shut down primary production facilities.
