Shanxi's installed new energy storage capacity reached 5 GW as of end-July, with 90 storage stations now connected to the grid, according to State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Co. Grid-side storage accounted for 32 stations with 4.36 GW rated capacity, while power-source-side storage totaled 58 stations with 0.64 GW.
The province's wind and solar capacity reached 80.61 GW by end-June, with projections of 178 GW by 2030. The rapid expansion of renewable capacity has intensified pressure on grid peak-shaving and supply security, positioning new energy storage as a key flexibility resource for the evolving power system. Under current plans, Shanxi targets over 8 GW of new energy storage capacity by 2027, driving direct investment exceeding 10 billion yuan ($1.49 billion).
State Grid Shanxi has introduced multiple measures to support storage development, including the province's first new energy storage development guideline, which establishes a four-tier carrying capacity evaluation system to guide project siting near 500 kV substations. The company has also streamlined grid connection approvals and accelerated substation upgrades to ensure timely commissioning.
During a peak demand period on the evening of July 23, the province's storage stations and virtual power plants were dispatched collectively, with new energy storage achieving maximum output of 2.88 GW and sustaining over 2 GW for 1.3 hours, validating the scalability of grid-adjustable resources.
