China Jan-Jul coal mining profits surge 50% YoY

China's coal mining and washing industry posted a 50.4% year-on-year surge in profits during January-July, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed, as the mining sector continued to outperform broader industrial activity.

Industrial enterprises above designated size generated 45.82 trillion yuan in combined profits in the first seven months of 2026, up 17.6% year on year. Revenue reached 80.92 trillion yuan, up 6.5% from the same period last year.

The mining sector led profit growth, with total profits rising 34.9% year on year to 666.05 billion yuan. Coal mining and washing specifically contributed 250.85 billion yuan in profits, up 50.4% from a year earlier. Oil and natural gas extraction profits rose 15.4% to 240.73 billion yuan, while nonferrous metal mining profits jumped 74.9% to 124.11 billion yuan.

Revenue in the coal mining and washing industry reached 1.59 trillion yuan in January-July, up 10.4% year on year. The broader mining sector posted revenue of 3.17 trillion yuan, up 8.6%, while manufacturing revenue rose 7.0% to 70.39 trillion yuan.

The electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply sector saw profits decline 5.8% year on year to 478.42 billion yuan, with revenue up just 0.9% at 7.35 trillion yuan. Electricity and heat production and supply specifically reported profits of 399.95 billion yuan, down 8.0% from a year earlier.

Operating costs for industrial enterprises above designated size totaled 68.79 trillion yuan in January-July, up 5.9% year on year. Coal mining and washing operating costs rose 4.8% to 1.10 trillion yuan.
