China's renewable energy development remained stable in the first half of 2026, with installed renewable power capacity reaching 2.46 TW, accounting for 60.7% of the country's total power capacity.

The National Energy Administration said at a July monthly video conference on renewable power development that wind and solar capacity stood at about 1.95 TW, nearly half of total capacity, with solar capacity roughly on par with coal-fired power.

New renewable installations totaled 117 GW over January-June, representing 73.9% of all new capacity additions, while renewable power generation reached 1,960 TWh, or 41.2% of total electricity output. Combined wind and solar generation hit 1,250 TWh, accounting for 24.6% of total electricity consumption.

The administration urged efforts in three key areas to ensure a strong start to the 15th "Five-Year Plan" period: implementing plans and policies, expanding green power consumption to boost renewable absorption, and accelerating project development.

Local energy authorities were told to fully implement the renewable consumption minimum share targets and responsibility weight system, coordinate with relevant departments to draft absorption plans, and set science-based renewable utilization rate targets while balancing project returns with system costs.

The administration also called for accelerating construction of large wind and solar bases, while promoting offshore wind, onshore centralized wind and solar, solar thermal and distributed renewable projects, and advancing preliminary work to start construction as soon as possible.
