CHN Energy accelerates AI-driven digital transformation across coal-power value chain

China Energy Investment Corp (CHN Energy) is accelerating artificial intelligence deployment across its coal, power, chemicals, transport and hydrogen businesses, leveraging its integrated industry chain advantages to advance digital transformation.

The company's AI applications have reached the forefront of China's energy sector, spokesperson Zhao Zhe said at a second-quarter press conference on July 29, adding that the group will continue embracing new technologies to support the industry's digital transition.

CHN Energy has established an AI research institute and a "Digital CHN Energy" leadership group, building an integrated AI platform with a three-tier model architecture. In June 2025, the company launched "Qingyuan", the world's first billion-parameter large model for the power generation industry, and is now developing similar models for coal, coal chemicals and hydrogen sectors.

In coal mining, all 10 of the company's national intelligent demonstration mines have passed acceptance checks, with fully mechanized mining faces achieving intermediate-level or higher intelligence. Shendong Coal pioneered an unmanned mining model that improved production efficiency by 6.7%, while Zhunge'er Energy retrofitted 124 heavy-duty mining trucks for autonomous operation around the clock.

In the power sector, CHN Energy has built 13 advanced intelligent power stations. Longyuan Power's wind turbine intelligent sensing system, deployed across more than 500 sites using data from 140 GW of renewable capacity, has achieved equipment fault warning accuracy above 85% and cut maintenance time by 60%. Dadu River's intelligent dispatch technology reduces manual adjustments by over 30,000 times annually and adds 400 GWh of power generation.

The company has also deployed a unified industrial internet platform across its nine chemical subsidiaries, while its Shenshuo railway line operates China's first intelligent "3+0" heavy-haul train and Shuohuang railway completed unmanned heavy-haul train trials.

Zhang Yansheng, head of CHN Energy's digital intelligence department, said the company will further optimize AI management mechanisms, strengthen the AI research institute's innovation role, and scale up high-value AI applications to support energy industry transformation.
