EU proposes slowing ETS emissions reduction pace from 2031

The European Commission has proposed slowing the pace of emissions reductions under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) from 2031, with the linear reduction factor set at 3.7% for 2031-2035 and further reduced to 1.7% for 2036-2040. This would allow new allowances to enter the system into the 2040s, rather than the previously planned 2039 cutoff. WWF warned the change would permit an additional 2 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions.
