CGN switches on 200 MW offshore solar project at Ningde

China General Nuclear Power Corp (CGN) has connected its 200 MW offshore solar project at Ningde to the grid, marking the company's first nuclear-solar hybrid offshore installation and one of Fujian province's pioneering offshore solar ventures.

Located within the water area of the Ningde nuclear power station site in Fuding city, the project covers approximately 3020 mu (about 201 hectares) and includes a 20 MW/40 MWh energy storage system. Over its 25-year operational life, the facility is expected to generate around 300 GWh annually, equivalent to saving about 91,300 tonnes of standard coal and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 198,000 tonnes.

The project's 220 kV transmission line spans 12 km, featuring a 138-meter-tall cross-sea tower — the tallest transmission pylon in eastern Fujian.

Wu Cheng'en, engineering management manager at CGN New Energy's Fujian subsidiary, said the company developed an offshore photovoltaic pile-support technology platform to address challenges including complex nearshore conditions, corrosion of traditional steel structures and high construction and maintenance costs.

The platform achieved breakthroughs in large-diameter high-performance concrete piles and lightweight support systems, cutting overall pile and support construction costs by over 10% and establishing a replicable technical solution for nearshore solar construction.
