Russia's coal companies suffered a net loss of 123.1 billion rubles ($1.5 billion) in January-May 2026, 9.6% lower than a net loss of 136.2 billion rubles a year earlier, according to Rosstat data.
Total profits of Russian coal producers fell 42.2% year on year to 35.5 billion rubles, while total losses declined 19% to 158.6 billion rubles, data showed.
Only 34.3% of companies remained profitable during the first five months, down slightly from 35.1% in the corresponding period of 2025. By contrast, 65.7% operated at a loss, an increase from 64.9% a year prior.
The coal industry has been in the trough amid the loss of export markets due to sanctions, weak economic conditions, payment problems, limited infrastructure, and other factors.
The share of losses at coal companies remains the highest in the mining sector. Among all economic sectors for which Rosstat maintains statistics, the share of losses at other land passenger transport companies is also high (64.4%), followed by steam and hot water production, transmission, and distribution (60.2%), and water transport (60.1%).
