China's industrial firms saw revenue growth widen but profit growth narrow in the first half of 2026, with coal mining posting strong gains while power and heat supply profits contracted.
The National Bureau of Statistics data showed January-June revenue for industrial firms above the designated size reached 69.26 trillion yuan, up 6.5% year on year. Mining sector revenue rose 8.5% to 2.73 trillion yuan, manufacturing gained 7.1% to 60.33 trillion yuan, and utilities including power, heat, gas and water supply edged up 1.0% to 6.20 trillion yuan.
Within mining, coal mining and washing revenue climbed 9.3% to 1.36 trillion yuan, oil and gas extraction rose 12.8% to 653.50 billion yuan, and non-ferrous metal mining jumped 34.2% to 264.82 billion yuan. Ferrous metal mining revenue fell 6.1% to 214.71 billion yuan, and non-metal mining dropped 10.3% to 140.21 billion yuan. Power and heat supply revenue was 4.81 trillion yuan, up 0.9%.
Total January-June profit for industrial firms stood at 3.95 trillion yuan, up 18.7% year on year on a comparable basis. Mining sector profit surged 33.5% to 574.50 billion yuan, manufacturing rose 20.1% to 2.97 trillion yuan, while utilities profit fell 4.2% to 402.27 billion yuan.
Coal mining and washing profit soared 41.1% to 210.72 billion yuan, oil and gas extraction profit rose 16.6% to 211.59 billion yuan, and non-ferrous metal mining profit jumped 80.0% to 107.47 billion yuan. Ferrous metal mining profit gained 4.7% to 25.58 billion yuan, and non-metal mining profit rose 10.1% to 14.93 billion yuan. Power and heat supply profit declined 6.2% to 335.28 billion yuan.
Operating costs for industrial firms totaled 58.80 trillion yuan in January-June, up 5.9% year on year. Mining sector costs rose 2.6% to 1.77 trillion yuan, with coal mining and washing costs up 4.7% to 947.40 billion yuan. Utilities costs increased 1.8% to 5.55 trillion yuan, and power and heat supply costs rose 1.9% to 4.30 trillion yuan.
