Japan imported 11.76 million tonnes of coal in June 2026, up 10.2% year on year, with the import value reaching 304.754 billion yen ($1.87 billion), a 46.8% increase, according to preliminary trade data released by the Ministry of Finance on July 22. Thermal coal imports totaled 7.148 million tonnes, up 18.5% YoY, with the import value at 165.806 billion yen, surging 60.4% YoY.
