Summit Focus | Mineral commodity trading heats up on MSE

Mining product trading on the Mongolian Stock Exchange (MSE) has achieved landmark milestones over the recent years, with daily trading volume growing steadily and market activity surging up, said an MSE official at the 3rd China Coal Import International Summit 2026 held in Guangzhou on March 19.

Munkhbat Davaatseren, Interim Chief Executive Officer at MSE, shared a comprehensive analysis of the legal framework, market overview, and future development for mining product trading in Mongolia during the summit.

Since being reclassified to the frontier market status in September 2023, Mongolia has accelerated the globalization process of its financial markets, Munkhbat noted.

The government passed the Law on Mining Products Exchange the same year, officially establishing a legal framework governing the trading of mineral products. It also issued decisions to levy mining royalties based on exchange prices, aimed at further standardizing market orders.

As of now, the MSE has listed 162 stocks, 13 bonds, 2 closed-end funds and 5 types of asset-backed securities. In commodity trading, mineral products such as coal, iron ore, copper concentrate, and fluorite concentrate play a significant role.

From January 2023 to March 12, 2026, total volume of mineral products traded on the MSE reached 73.9 million tonnes, with transaction value totaling $7.36 billion. Among these, coal trades dominated, with transaction value exceeding $6.5 billion.

Since its establishment in 1991, the MSE has continuously optimized its trading systems and clearing and settlement processes to ensure alignment with international standards. Currently, it has achieved 100% online trading, introduced global custody services, and established a trading mechanism allowing rapid price discovery and swift trade execution, ensuring safety and convenience for investors.

Furthermore, Munkhbat also highlighted various price index baskets published by MSE, which serve as critical references for commodity market participants.

MSE's mineral commodity trading market covers coal, iron ore, copper concentrate, and fluorite concentrate, attracting numerous participants such as designated institutions, laboratories, logistics companies, and warehouses.

Its operations span multiple major domestic and international ports, including those in Ceke, Ganqimaodu, and Erenhot,  facilitating the import and export of mineral products.

The stock exchange has successfully organized 1,653 mining product transactions, covering both long-term and spot contracts. It has also established precise mechanisms for monitoring contract performance and product quality, as well as sanctions for contract overdue and non-performance.

For interested investors, the MSE offers a convenient pathway to participation. After registering through the COMEX system, signing an agreement with the MSE, and depositing margin, investors can participate in the upcoming trading auctions.

Looking ahead, Munkhbat stated that the MSE will continue to enhance market transparency and trading efficiency. He also revealed plans to introduce additional trading products, such as futures contracts, to meet the diverse needs of investors.
