India's Jindal Steel Limited, part of the Naveen Jindal Group, has unveiled plans to double its structural steel production at its Raigarh facility in Chhattisgarh from 1.2 million tonnes per annum (Mpta) to 2.4 Mtpa by mid-2028, multiple local media outlets reported.

By scaling up production, the company aims to meet growing domestic demand for heavy and ultra-heavy structural steel sections used in infrastructure, energy, and industrial projects while enhancing India's self-reliance in heavy structural materials and reducing dependence on imported structural steel sections.

The initiative involves commissioning a new structural steel mill and integrating advanced upstream and downstream technologies. These upgrades will allow Jindal Steel to significantly broaden its product offerings, including ultra-heavy structural sections with depths up to 1,100 mm and weights reaching 1,500 kg/m, leaping from the current maximum of 333 kg/m.

Structural steel, prized for its strength, ductility, and resilience, is vital to large-scale construction, including bridges, towers, and industrial buildings. Demand is surging, driven by government-led infrastructure schemes and increased private investment.

Jindal Steel operates an integrated steelmaking model, with captive raw material resources and downstream processing capabilities. The Raigarh facility is one of the company's key manufacturing locations, alongside plants in Angul, Odisha, and Patratu, Jharkhand.
