Sxcoal Thermal Coal Weekly Monitor (Dec 17, 2025)

Production The average capacity utilization at 160 thermal coal mines surveyed in Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia stood at 88.81% during the reporting week, down 1.49 pps from the previous week. Some mines finished production goals cut or stopped production, pulling down overall capacity utilization rate.

Stock Total coal inventory at surveyed mines stood at 4.19 Mt, increasing 37 Kt WoW. Chemical plants and other end buyers presented limited demand, while railway station-based traders remained on the sideline, slowing down coal sales and leading to stock build-ups at mines. A few mines reported quite large inventory pressure.

Price Over the week, 0.63% of surveyed coal mines raised prices by an average of 10 yuan/t, while 36.88% reduced prices by 31 yuan/t on average. Thermal coal mine-mouth prices kept falling, and some mines noted sales showed no obvious improvement after price cuts. In the near term, the price downturn will continue and more attention should be given to demand after facility overhauls at mines.
