India, the world's sixth-largest solar photovoltaic (PV) exporter, accounted for 2.51% of the global PV market in 2023, up from just 0.4% in 2013. The export value surged to $1.83 in 2023, compared to $200.8 million in 2013, according to an Indian officer.
Between April and October of fiscal year (FY) 2025, the country's exports of PV cells-either incorporated into panels or assembled into modules-totaled $7.12 billion, with 96% of these products sold to the U.S.
Meanwhile, New Delhi, capital of India, also shipped unassembled PV cells valued at $25 million, with 90% of these cargos delivered to the U.S.
"India has experienced remarkable growth in its solar PV exports, with an over eightfold surge, strengthening its position as a major solar PV exporter", the officer said.
He attributed the growth to rising global demand and policies that have spurred the development of solar energy.
In FY2024, India imported solar equipment worth $7 billion, with 62.6% of these imports coming from China.
