Indonesia's state-run power company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), through PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), will increase the use of biomass co-firing in coal-fired power plants (PLTUs) with waste to support environmental sustainability and open up economic opportunities.
In 2024, PLN has allocated 1.65 million tonnes of biomass for co-firing and plans to increase this number to 3 million tonnes by 2025. Currently, biomass co-firing has been implemented in 47 PLTUs and is expected to expand to 52 power plants by 2025, according to PLN EPI Corporate Secretary Mamit Setiawan.
Biomass sources include wood waste and agricultural waste such as rice husks, palm shells and bagasse. In addition, PLN EPI also uses solid waste as a coal substitute in several power plants.
This move not only supports the green energy transition, but also creates economic opportunities for local communities, especially in the fields of waste management and agriculture. Through these measures, PLN aims to reduce its reliance on coal and promote greener energy usage.
