The United States produced 40.77 million short tons (36.99 million tonnes) of coal in November 2024, down 14.2% from 47.52 million short tons a year ago and 6.6% from the previous month's 43.65 million short tons, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said in its Monthly Energy Review on December 23.

Over the first eleven months, the nation churned out 469 million short tons of coal, 11.89% lower than 532 million short tons a year ago, data showed.

The U.S. exported 8.97 million short tons of coal in October 2024, dropping 5.13% from both the previous year and the last month.

Total coal exports amounted to 88.87 million short tons over January-October, 6.99% higher than 83.06 million short tons a year earlier.

The country consumed 34.54 million short tons of coal in September 2024, falling 7.52% on the year and 18.57% month on month.

The power sector was estimated to consume 31.58 million short tons of coal in September, down 7.86% year on year; the industrial sector consumed 2.91 million short tons, declining 3.74% on the year; the commercial sector used 41,000 short tons, sliding 4.65% year on year.

Over the first nine months this year, the U.S. consumed 312 million short tons of coal, down 4.19% from the previous year. The power sector used 284 million short tons, decreasing 3.91% year on year, while that in the industrial sector declined 7.08% to 26.74 million short tons.
