Three Gorges Dam generates 1,700 TWh of power as of its 30th anniversary

Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydropower facility in China, has generated over 1,700 TWh of power as of December 14, marking the 30th anniversary of its construction.

This power generation is equivalent to saving 550 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing 1.49 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions, according to China's Ministry of Water Resources.

Since the first operation of its hydropower generator unit in July, 2003, the project has intercepted floods nearly 70 times and supplied 360 billion cu.m of water to the region in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

The dam has also contributed to improving soil and water conservation in both the project area and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, with a forest coverage rate exceeding 50%.
