A brand cluster for China's coking coal and coking industry was established this week by China Risun Group in collaboration with key industry players, aiming to increase the concentration of the industry and enhancing self-regulation in the industry, while promoting international competitiveness.

China is home to the most comprehensive range of coking coal types worldwide and stands as the largest producer and consumer of coking coal. In 2023, global production of washed coking coal reached approximately 1.05 billion tonnes, with China contributing around 550 million tonnes or 53% of the total. China also represents 62% of global consumption.

Abundant coking coal resources are crucial for sustaining China's socio-economic development and serve as an irreplaceable raw material for the steel industry.

Globally, approximately 112 countries and regions consume coke, while around 80 countries produce it. In 2023, global coke production and consumption totaled around 720 million tonnes, of which China accounted for 490 million tonnes or 68% of the global total.

Coke is also a vital commodity in the international market, with annual global trade volumes reaching roughly 30 million tonnes. China is the world's largest coke exporter, shipping to more than 20 countries and regions, and at its peak, Chinese coke exports constituted 50% of international trade volumes. As of 2023, China's coking industry had a market value exceeding 1.5 trillion yuan.

The brand cluster was formed by China Risun Group, Shanxi Coking Coal Energy Group and China Pingmei Shenma Group, and 14 other member units.

The 17 enterprises are spread across nine provinces, including Shanxi, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, and Guizhou. They represent an annual production capacity of approximately 89.6 million tonnes altogether, accounting for 16% of national capacity, with an additional 7.32 million tonnes of capacity under construction.
