Indonesian coal miner PT Adaro Energy expected its thermal coal production to remain flat in 2024, an executive said on December 13

"We want to keep production flat to ensure coal reserves are maintained to meet power plant demand," Hendri Tan, director of Adaro Indonesia, a subsidiary of Adaro, said in Jakarta.

However, he did not provide a specific volume target for 2024 output, noting the company is still awaiting government approval of its mine plan and budget (RKAB) for next year.

Adaro, which produces both thermal and metallurgical coal, is targeting an increase in met coal output to 6 million tonnes by 2025 from a projected 4.3 million tonnes for this year, Tan added.

The company has intended to diversify its business under growing pressure of cutting carbon emissions in Indonesia and the global community, focusing on development in metal and clean energy. Meanwhile, its ambitions in metallurgical coal production also help the company pivot away from thermal coal.

Indonesia is the world's largest exporter of thermal coal. Adaro supplies coal to domestic power plants and international buyers.

Adaro's coal production was 62.88 million tonnes in 2022, a 19% rise from a year earlier. The company set the output target of 64 million tonnes for this year.

In January-September, the company's coal production totaled 50.73 million tonnes, a 12% rise year on year.
