Coke, as the intermediate link of coal-coke-steel industry chain, its price fluctuation can mirror the changes in those two industries. However, it was hard to make an accurate quantitative forecast for national coke price changes in the past. Coking enterprises and relevant industries thus have been facing significant risks for a long time.

China Coal Resource (CCR)’s China Coke Price Index aims to manifest the trend of China coke price with index curves, assisting market players to gain a better understanding of the price history. Moreover, it gives scientific estimates on future price, which will help market players to prevent or reduce potential risks.

1. CCR China Coke Price Index
The CCR China Coke Price Index is mainly based on prices of China’s standard Grade I and II metallurgical coke, as well as that of the Grade III metallurgical coke and foundry coke of three grades. The prices data covers 67 supply areas in 21 provinces (autonomous regions or municipalities), or over 90% of China’s coke production capacity, and 24 key end-users from 11 provinces (autonomous regions or municipalities). The price on Jan 2, 2006 is set as basis point of 100 and weekly price updates can be traced back since then and some even to 1996.

The price index is a comprehensive index for Chinese coke market, as it is developed from the monthly weighted averages in coke supply and consumption areas, based on the weights of these areas in China’s coke and/or steel production and with due consideration to market sensitiveness.

CCR China Coke Price Index includes category index and regional index.

1.1 Category Index
Taking Grade I and Grade II metallurgical coke as sample basis, the category index reflects the price trend of Chinese coke market from the perspective of coke categories. The base period starts from Jan 2, 2006 and the base index is 100. Quality specifications of the Grade I and Grade II metallurgical coke are as follows:

 

1.2 Regional Index
The regional price index is based on the VAT-included ex-works prices in 67 supply areas, including Linfen, Shenmu, Erdos, etc., and the VAT-included delivered prices in 24 steel enterprises, such as Shougang, Ansteel, etc. The base period starts from Jan 2006, and the base index is 100.

Supply areas: Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Beijing, Shanxi, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Chongqing, Sichuan, Shanghai, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou and Yunan.
